There’s a fable from long ago about a mighty oak tree and some reeds. The giant oak grew near a brook, tall and strong. And when the howling wind blew, it stood proud and upright, thinking it was truly the mightiest one of all.
Not far away, some reeds grew at the edge of the brook. With their roots planted down in the earth securely, they were able to dance and sway with the winds.
One day a great hurricane came, and the proud oak stood tall, fighting against the storm. The reeds were blown this way and that, bowing low as they yielded to the gales. The strong winds were unrelenting, and suddenly the great tree crashed to the earth. At dawn when the storm subsided, the reeds still stood, strong as ever. They had danced and swayed throughout the entire storm.
Today, as we enter into our day, we can remember to keep our roots planted securely in the earth for power and strength. But also, let’s remember to be open to what the day may bring, dancing and swaying with whatever comes.
We can learn to bend flexibly, knowing we’re firmly planted within Spirit. If strong emotions or unsettling thoughts arise today, let’s not let the hurricane tear us down. Let’s be able to sway and dance, moving through them. And then when dawn comes tomorrow morning, we’ll be standing strong as ever!
