As a writer and a speaker, I am a wordsmith. One who smiths words, working with the meaning, effect, and even power of words.
I have often contemplated the power of words. The power of a single word.
PEACE
LOVE
DIVINITY
I invite you to pause with me for a moment and just consider what lives as meaning in each word written above.
What arises within you as images, thoughts, and feelings for each word?
What experiences or events come to mind?
What hopes or aspirations for the future surface?
Here we begin to touch upon the power of a single word.
And then we venture into the activity of stringing together words in a sentence, a poem, or a story. For this is the work of the wordsmith.
Wordsmith
Plays with language; Creates meaning
Like poets, writers, rappers… storytellers.
As we string together words, whether we are speaking or writing, we can begin to see the effect that words have on others. They can be playful and funny. Or loving and kind. Even serious and direct. Or heartbreaking and sad.
Words have great power. They can affect the people in our lives and the world around us.
Words
Slaves of the mind, Blessing or blade
Like nature… barbaric or beautiful
And yet, words are a part of our everyday life. We think with words; we speak with words. They’re the vehicle used to be social with others. They help us to communicate.
But do words affect the way we think and perceive ourselves and the world?
I’m reminded of the sacred verse from the Bible,
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
What if we consider that our words are capable of being divine, capable of shaping our thoughts and the world we live in? Capable of evolving our consciousness to a higher level. Capable of creating love, peace, and joy in the world.
What if every word uttered was this potent? What world could we create then?
I leave you with these words, powerful words that hold great wisdom, to contemplate today.
I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word.
-Emily Dickinson
