WEEK 71

God, what guidance do you have for me today?

Today,

be a watcher of divinity.

Spot its essence in people;

in the unfolding of events, the flow of the weather…

and see it in you, watching.

No need to do anything when you see it.

Just observe.

Of course, all exists through the love of the Creator.

So, divinity is everywhere.

And yet there are moments and pockets

and stretches of divine aliveness not to be missed.

See divinity emerge in the smile of a child,

in a simple, kind act,

helping someone in need…

See it in the welcoming of one who feels left out;

in the joy on bright faces,

in the peace of someone facing upward to the sun

and closing their eyes;

in the joy of someone dancing alone,

and someone else nodding in appreciation

as they look on.

There are countless moments of divinity being conspicuous…

to notice…

to enjoy…

to appreciate.

Just watch, today.

You’ll see.

Evening Reflection

Recognizing divinity is a mindset. It is seeing the world from a perspective that acknowledges life itself as a gift of the Divine. And within that grand context, divinity moves within it as the breath and spirit of life. Divine moments, when they are experienced, can touch the soul in a way nothing else can. Kindness, for instance, may be seen as weakness to some, but when one experiences it in a moment of need, it can be deeply felt as a touch of divine grace.

Sleeping in today was divine. It was divine rest. When I finally went out to ski today while it was snowing, looking at it felt like I was looking divinity right in the eyes… and I experienced its gentle touch on my face as a divine kiss. As my wife and I sat for lunch at a community table, I experienced the wonderfully kind people sitting with us as divinity’s light and love smiling, laughing, and connecting us together. Even the music being played by a young woman singing while playing the guitar created a joy that perfumed the whole mountain café and helped to create an atmosphere of camaraderie and community.

At dinner, my wife and I recognized our waiter as someone who had served us in Boulder. And he recognized us. Not only did we have a beautiful time reconnecting, but he gave us a discount and said we were some of his favorite customers. What a divine, kind thing to say. And the food was amazing! Well, actually it was… yes, divine.

Seeing the divine in daily life is mindset. It is a skill and also a choice. I realize that the more I choose to see it and acknowledge it, the more I realize just how present divinity is in all things, regardless of all I see that would seem contrary to that notion.

I have experienced that when I choose to see divinity I become a more powerful carrier of qualities such as kindness, forgiveness, mercy, gentleness, goodness, love, joy, peace and patience. They become qualities lived more in each moment and expressed more powerfully in more circumstances. And when that happens I think divinity’s presence in the world also increases. Divinity becomes more embodied and shared through the willingness to be… divine.
